Cliveden

No Cliveden have ever ventured into Human Space. They are one of only a few races with a lock on the portal technology that controls who can and cannot travel instantly between solar systems, making the arbiters of access in their region of space, which includes eighty-one planets across fifty-two separate star systems (as well as a number of inhabited moons and artificial stations). They permit only their own vessels—family-owned spacecraft—to use their portals, giving them an uncontested monopoly on all shipping and travel across more than two hundred worlds.

Physically, Cliveden are a reptilian species with scaly epidermis that runs from shades of pale blue to lavender. They have coronal crests instead of hair, black eyes, and bifurcated tongues. They are a pragmatic, no-nonsense race, highly efficient and supremely punctual. By extension, they don’t believe in coincidence or random chance and find the idea of such to be offensive. Perhaps owing to their reptilian nature, Cliveden have very poor olfactory abilities.

Cliveden are intensely xenophobic, which many find ironic given that their wealth stems from the control of portals.

They find alcohol in any form to be extremely toxic, and as such prohibit possession of it onboard their ships.

Cliveden never speak their own languages in the company of other races and consider doing so a moral outrage.

First appearance: Buffalito Contingency.
