Plenum: member of that race while still maintaining their unique abilities. Two or more Plenum may open an portal across space to another pair (or more), allowing instantaneous movement between any two points in the galaxy. Plenum pair off during adolescence and continue as a couple throughout life. Plenum reproduce by selecting an individual from another sapient species and using that person's genetic information as a template for their eggs. The resulting offspring appear to be members of the targeted species but grow into the abilities shared by all Plenum which includes pairing to access translocational portals, limited telepathy, and increased longevity. The actual lifespan of a Plenum is in part determined by its template species, but typically considerably longer.

The Plenum hide in plain sight, spreading their offspring among members of the species they appear to belong to. Very few non-Plenum know of their existence, and only the Plenum know just which species they co-exist with. Their existence, along with their portal-generating abilities, are their most closely guarded secrets.

The Plenum have a profound distrust of the Clarkesons in particular, and colony or hivemind creatures in general
